EL VIEJA

Vale: This is the second part of the interview, which is called “El Viaje”. So, how did you leave Cuba, and what form of transport was used?

Clara: Well, when I left Cuba, I left by plane, a Mexican Airline. And when I came to the United States, from Mexico to the border, I went by bus, then after getting to the border, I took a bus that took me to the center of Miami, where I called my sister by phone, and they picked me up.

Vale: Ahhhh, okay, what do you remember with most intensity from your departure?

Clara: From my departure from Cuba?

Vale: Yes.

Clara: Well, I remember my childhood, which was beautiful, my friendships, my younger days, I danced in the Ballet, which is a beautiful memory to have. With time, the sadness starts to disappear, and only the memories. And in Cuba, I left a nephew, whom I talk to on the phone, and we help with his assistance and his life in Cuba.

Vale: And… sorry, I’m looking at the other questions.  You already answered most of the questions on the paper *hahahaha*. Did you feel hope or fear during your journey? Were there any moments of kindness or unexpected help along the way?

Clara: Well, the journey from Cuba to Mexico, I didn’t feel, what do you call it, fear. I was young, and when one is young in their mind, you think that there is a future, and the anxiety of living isn’t there. Now, when I was already in the United States, I would take flights to see my father in Mexico, yes, I felt a lot of fear that the flight would arrive in Cuba and they would take me back. I felt so much distress every time a flight went above Cuba, I would feel fear. There was one time when I was taking a Flight back to Miami, coming from Uruguay, because my husband is Uruguayan, and I saw the island in full darkness, and it made me sad.
